Porygon-Z was released as part of the Plasma Blast expansion in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in August 2013. This set was based on the Team Plasma narrative arc from the Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 video games, characterized by the inclusion of Team Plasma-themed Pokémon that often featured distinct silver-colored card borders and special attack mechanics. The card's design features artwork by the illustrator Mizue, who utilized a bold, digital aesthetic intended to reflect the character's status as a corrupted, artificially created virtual entity.
