Where it came from
Rival was released as part of the Secret Wonders expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, which debuted in late 2007. This set was part of the Diamond & Pearl Series, serving as the fourth installment that introduced players to the Sinnoh region's mechanics and Pokémon. The card functions as a Trainer-Supporter, designed to encourage strategic deck management by requiring players to discard their hand to draw a new set of cards, reflecting the competitive spirit of Pokémon battles.
The card features artwork by illustrator Ken Sugimori, whose distinct, clean aesthetic has defined the visual identity of the franchise since its inception. His design for Rival emphasizes the thematic tension between trainers, capturing a sense of urgency that matches the high-stakes gameplay of the era. Like many uncommon cards in the Secret Wonders set, it was primarily sought after by players rather than collectors, serving as a functional staple in tournament decks before later power creep rendered it less essential.
