Provenance

Where it came from

The Shellder card from the Expedition Base Set was released in 2002 as part of the first Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion to utilize the e-Reader technology. This set marked a significant shift in design, introducing the dot-code strip along the left side of the card, which allowed players to scan the card into a Nintendo Game Boy Advance to unlock Pokédex entries, minigames, or special data.

The illustration was rendered by Keiko Fukuyama, whose art style for this era of the trading card game often leaned into softer, more rounded character depictions. As a common card, it served as a foundational element of the water-type roster in the Expedition set, reflecting the broader transition toward the e-Card era where functional gameplay mechanics were integrated directly into the physical aesthetic of the card design.
