Provenance

Where it came from

Released in September 2001, the Neo Revelation set served as the third expansion in the Neo Series of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, introducing players to the legendary Johto region. The Shuckle card, numbered 51/64, was designed to reflect the creature's status as a defensive utility Pokémon, categorized here as a Fighting type despite its typical Grass/Rock dual-typing in the video games. This card was part of a shift in the game's aesthetic, moving toward the more detailed and expressive digital illustration styles that began to define the early 2000s era of the franchise.

The artwork was produced by veteran illustrator Atsuko Nishida, who has been a central figure in Pokémon design since the series' inception. Nishida’s interpretation of Shuckle focuses on the creature’s unique shell and sedentary nature, utilizing the clean, refined character lines characteristic of the Neo era. While common in rarity, the card remains a notable example of how the Neo Revelation set integrated the peculiar biology of Generation II Pokémon into the competitive landscape, capturing the charm of the quirky, juice-fermenting insect for a generation of players.
