Provenance

Where it came from

Released in September 2001, the Neo Revelation expansion served as the tenth set of the Pokémon Trading Card Game and the third installment in the Neo series. It was designed to introduce players to the legendary Pokémon from the Johto region, featuring a unique selection of Pokémon that had not yet appeared in card form. This set is particularly noted for introducing the Shiny Pokémon mechanic, which remains one of the most sought-after features for collectors today.

The Staryu card, numbered 56/64, features artwork by illustrator Atsuko Nishida. Nishida is a long-standing contributor to the franchise, known for creating the iconic design of Pikachu. Her work on this card reflects the clean, approachable aesthetic characteristic of early Wizards of the Coast-era expansions, focusing on the simplicity of the Pokémon’s form while maintaining the vibrant, aquatic theme essential to the water-type category.
