Tapu Bulu-GX was introduced as part of the Burning Shadows expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released internationally in August 2017. As the guardian deity of Ula'ula Island within the Sun and Moon video game generation, the character was designed to represent the fierce, grounded power of the Grass and Fairy types. This particular iteration, marked 149/147, is a Secret Rare Rainbow version, a design aesthetic introduced during this era that utilized textured foil and a monochromatic, shimmering palette to distinguish high-rarity chase cards from their standard counterparts.

The card was illustrated by 5ban Graphics, a prolific studio known for producing numerous GX and full-art cards during the Sun and Moon series. The design focused on a dynamic, intimidating pose that emphasized the character's muscular build and connection to nature. Upon its release, the card saw significant competitive play due to its Nature's Judgment attack, which allowed players to discard energy to deal massive damage, cementing its status as both a collector's item and a staple in the high-level tournament meta of the time.
