Torkoal V (188/202) was released as part of the Sword & Shield base set, which launched in early 2020 as the inaugural expansion of the eighth generation of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Introduced to represent the new V mechanic, which replaced the GX cards of the previous era, this card reflects the transition into a format prioritizing high hit points and aggressive attack potential. The design maintains the standard layout for V cards, featuring a sleek, metallic border and a vibrant, action-oriented illustration that highlights the Pokémon's fire-breathing capabilities.

The artwork was provided by 5ban Graphics, a studio frequently contracted by The Pokémon Company to produce CGI-rendered illustrations for modern sets. Their approach here leans into the modern aesthetic of the TCG, utilizing a dynamic composition that emphasizes Torkoal's sturdy, industrial design. Upon release, the card was received as a functional addition to Fire-type decks, valued for its ability to discard energy cards to power up its Combat Blaze attack, fitting well within the strategic meta established at the beginning of the Galar region's TCG journey.
