Tornadus VMAX

Tornadus VMAX, identified as card 209/198, was released in the 2021 expansion Chilling Reign. This set was designed to integrate cards from the Japanese Sword & Shield expansions Peerless Fighters and Silver Lance/Jet-Black Spirit, bringing the legendary Forces of Nature Pokémon into the VMAX mechanic introduced in the Sword & Shield era. The VMAX mechanic, characterized by high HP and powerful signature moves, serves as the Pokémon TCG's equivalent to the Dynamax and Gigantamax features from the Nintendo Switch games.

The 'Rainbow Rare' variant, often referred to as a Hyper Rare, features an etched, holographic texture applied over a vibrant, monochromatic color palette. This design choice was intended to signify the card's prestige and rarity within the set. Like other Secret Rare cards of the period, this iteration was illustrated by a collaborative effort from the Creatures Inc. design team to ensure it matched the aesthetic standards of the Generation VIII card pool. It received attention from collectors primarily for its aesthetic finish and its role as a high-tier mechanical asset in the competitive card game scene at the time of its release.
