Provenance

Where it came from

The Venonat card from the Base Set 2 expansion was released in 2000 as part of Wizards of the Coast's effort to keep the original Base Set cards in circulation for players and collectors. As a reprint set, it consolidated cards from the initial Base Set and the Jungle expansion, providing an accessible way for newer fans to acquire staples that had become difficult to find following the initial Pokémon craze of 1999.

The illustration of Venonat was created by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and illustrator for the Pokémon franchise. His work typically features clean lines and a focus on the creature's anatomical features, staying true to the established aesthetic of the early generations. Within the context of the game, the card served as a functional common, intended for deck-building rather than competitive play, and it remains a modest piece of mid-era Pokémon card history.
