Provenance

Where it came from

The Weepinbell card, numbered 51/112, was released as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's EX FireRed & LeafGreen expansion in 2004. This set served as a nostalgic reimagining of the original Generation I Pokémon games, updating classic species with the modern mechanics and visual aesthetic of the EX era. Its production was part of an effort by The Pokémon Company to reintroduce the original Kanto-region Pokémon to a new generation of players who had joined the franchise following the release of the Ruby and Sapphire games.

The card features an illustration by the artist Kyoko Umemoto, who utilized the bold, clean lines characteristic of the era to capture the creature in its signature hovering stance. Like many uncommon cards in the set, it was designed primarily to function as a versatile evolution bridge within the Grass-type archetype, allowing players to transition from Bellsprout into the more formidable Victreebel. While it did not hold the same competitive prestige as the rare holographic cards of the set, it is well-regarded by collectors for its representative artwork and its role in completing the FireRed & LeafGreen set's comprehensive Kanto roster.
