Xatu

Released in the year 2001, the Neo Discovery expansion served as the second installment in the Neo Series for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set introduced players to the Johto region, drawing heavily from the themes of the second generation video games, Pokémon Gold and Silver. Xatu, a psychic-type bird Pokémon, was included as an uncommon card, reflecting its status as a distinct, totemic figure within the franchise's expanding lore during the transition into the new millennium.

The card features artwork by Hironobu Yoshida, whose style during the late nineties and early two-thousands defined much of the aesthetic for the Neo sets. Yoshida focused on capturing the surreal and contemplative nature of Xatu, an species often associated with predicting the future. The illustration emphasizes the creature's stationary, statuesque posture, which serves as a visual nod to the Pokémon's reputation for standing still in observation of the sun, blending traditional design motifs with the vibrant, layered card formatting typical of the Wizards of the Coast era.
