African Safari 5 Jours Sous Les Tropiques

Released in 1976 on the Arion label, African Safari 5 Jours Sous Les Tropiques serves as a significant entry in the discography of Lamine Konté, a Senegalese musician and master of the kora. This album emerged during a period of burgeoning international interest in West African traditional music, as artists like Konté sought to bridge the gap between regional oral traditions and the accessible format of the long-playing vinyl record. It functions as a sonic travelogue, capturing the atmospheric and improvisational elements characteristic of Konté's performances.

The design and production were overseen by Arion, a label known for its dedication to folk and traditional music documentation. The packaging reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-1970s world music movement, aiming to present the kora as both a historical artifact and a contemporary instrument of profound beauty. While the album was not a mainstream pop success, it was well-received among ethnomusicologists and enthusiasts of African percussion and string instrumentation for its clarity and the authentic technical mastery displayed throughout the sessions.
