Where it came from
Released in 1975 under the Geste Paysanne label, this record emerged from the work of the AGIEM (Association Générale des Institutrices et Instituteurs d'École Maternelle) and the UPCP (Union pour la Culture Populaire en Poitou). It served as an archival project intended to preserve the oral traditions of the Deux-Sèvres region in western France. The collection focused on capturing authentic nursery rhymes, counting-out games, and rounds, aiming to document the linguistic and cultural heritage of Poitou as it was passed down through generations of rural children.
The album reflects a broader mid-1970s movement in France dedicated to regional ethnography and the revival of folk traditions. By recording children and community members in their native settings, the collaborators sought to provide an educational tool that honored local identity against the backdrop of increasing urbanization and cultural standardization. The production was intended to be both a pedagogical resource for educators and a living repository of the Poitevin dialect and customs, standing as a significant document of regional oral history.
