Where it came from
Recorded live at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival, this album captures a seminal moment in jazz history when Norman Granz brought together members of the Count Basie alumni for a spontaneous, high-energy reunion. The performance was intended to evoke the spirit of the Kansas City swing era, placing the legendary Jimmy Rushing at the helm alongside improvisational giants like Lester Young and Illinois Jacquet.
The album serves as a landmark document of Verve Records' commitment to capturing the energy of the Newport stage, with Granz’s production focusing on raw, unfiltered interaction between the musicians. Critics have long regarded the session as a vital record of the transition between the big band era and the more individualistic, blues-driven improvisation that defined the mid-century sound, solidifying the reputations of all involved as architects of the genre.
