Where it came from
Baba Lamilami was released in 1981 on the Emperor Records label, serving as a prominent showcase for Mukaila Adisa Excellency and His Faaji Super Sound. This recording emerged during a vibrant period for Jùjú music, a genre that blends traditional Yoruba percussion with highlife influences and modern instrumentation. The album captures the signature rhythmic drive and social commentary that defined Adisa's contributions to the Nigerian music scene at the turn of the decade.
The album is a classic representation of the Faaji sound, characterized by its reliance on tight percussion sections and expansive, cyclical guitar lines intended for social gatherings and celebrations. Like many independent releases from the Nigerian recording industry of the early 1980s, the production focuses on the immediacy of the ensemble's performance, prioritizing the hypnotic, danceable quality of the music over studio artifice. It remains a localized artifact of an era when regional bandleaders wielded significant cultural influence through these high-fidelity pressings.
