Where it came from
Released in 1960 under the Command Records banner, later appearing on the Tonodisc label for international markets, Big Bold and Brassy was a hallmark of the audiophile movement spearheaded by Enoch Light. Light was a pioneer of stereo production, famously using 35mm magnetic film recording techniques to achieve a dynamic range and sonic clarity that far surpassed standard industry practices of the era. This album served as a showcase for those technical innovations, designed to push the fidelity limits of high-end home playback systems.
The album features a quintessential mid-century arrangement of brass-heavy orchestral pop and jazz standards. It was crafted with the purpose of providing an immersive, spatial listening experience, utilizing extreme stereo separation that became the signature of the Light Brigade sound. The production was critically noted for its clinical precision and punchy percussion, establishing Enoch Light as a master of 'persuasive percussion' that turned home stereo enthusiasts into loyal followers of his exacting technical standards.
