Where it came from
Released in 1982 by the Welsh label Sain, Cân Y Cymoedd serves as a musical document of the rich choral tradition synonymous with the South Wales valleys. The album was produced to capture the powerful, resonant sound of the region's male voice choirs, which have historically acted as both social anchors and cultural symbols for coal mining communities. By the early 1980s, these ensembles were increasingly seen as vital vessels for preserving the Welsh language and regional identity during a period of significant industrial shift.
The album features various choirs under the umbrella of the Sain label, which was founded in 1969 to promote Welsh-language music and culture. The design aesthetic reflects a traditional and respectful approach, prioritizing the voices of the singers over elaborate artifice, consistent with the label's mission to champion domestic talent. It was well-received by audiences interested in Welsh cultural heritage and remains a representative example of how regional record labels sought to immortalize the acoustic legacy of the valleys.
