Cantiques Aujourd'hui

Cantiques Aujourd'hui, released on the Studio S.M. label, emerged from the post-Vatican II liturgical renewal movement in France. The collection reflects the late 1960s shift toward utilizing popular music forms and contemporary vernacular to foster greater congregational engagement during Catholic services. Jean Debruynne and Gaëtan De Courrèges were central figures in this era of liturgical music reform, intentionally moving away from traditional Gregorian chant toward folk-inflected, accessible arrangements.

The production sought to bridge the gap between faith and the secular songwriting styles gaining popularity at the time. Studio S.M., a label renowned for its commitment to religious and cultural recordings, provided the platform for this experiment in modern hymnody.
