Where it came from
Released in 1971 as part of the Philips 'De Klassieken' series, this compilation highlights major violin works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The series was designed to make high-quality interpretations of the classical canon accessible to a broader audience, utilizing the label's extensive catalog of prestigious European recordings. It captures a period when Philips sought to solidify its reputation for sonic clarity and technical precision in classical music production.
The curation of these specific concertos showcases the definitive Baroque style promoted by Philips during the 1970s. The recording features top-tier soloists and orchestral support characteristic of the era's lean toward nuanced, disciplined performances of Bach. The minimalist, clean aesthetic of the sleeve design reflects the utilitarian yet elegant approach common to the label’s budget-friendly, high-fidelity classical reissues of that decade.
