Released in 1976 by the East German state-owned label Eterna, this recording features the German pianist Peter Rösel performing a selection of Franz Schubert's piano works. The collection is notable for including the D 946 Three Piano Pieces, written in the final months of Schubert's life, alongside earlier character pieces like the Grazer Fantasie. This release reflects the scholarly and meticulous approach to the Austro-German classical repertoire characteristic of the Eterna label during the 1970s.

Peter Rösel, a protégé of Lev Oborin and a celebrated soloist in the German Democratic Republic, was highly regarded for his technical clarity and restrained, thoughtful interpretations. His collaboration with Eterna served to solidify his reputation as an authoritative interpreter of Schubert. The design of the record, typical of Eterna's minimalist aesthetic, focuses on providing a clean, accessible presentation of the music, allowing the nuanced phrasing of the piano compositions to remain the primary focus for the listener.
