Florilège Grégorien − Chant Gregorien

Released in 1984 under the Studio SM label, the Florilège Grégorien captures the liturgical chants performed by the monks of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. This abbey is widely considered the epicenter of the restoration of Gregorian chant, a project initiated in the 19th century by Dom Prosper Guéranger to return the music to its authentic, monophonic roots. Under the direction of Dom Jean Claire, who served as choirmaster for decades, the ensemble sought to preserve the purity of the chant tradition through rigorous historical study and vocal technique.

The production reflects the abbey’s long-standing partnership with Studio SM, a French label specialized in sacred music that documented the Solesmes monks’ repertoire extensively throughout the 20th century. By the mid-1980s, the monks’ recordings had attained global renown, influencing both ecclesiastical practice and the broader public’s appreciation for medieval musical aesthetics.
