Where it came from
The album Franz Schmidt: The Last of the Great Romantics was released by Lyrichord in the 1970s as part of their efforts to bring lesser-known late Romantic repertoire to an American audience. Franz Schmidt, an Austrian composer whose work bridge the gap between late Romanticism and early twentieth-century modernism, often struggled for recognition against the shadow of his contemporaries like Mahler and Strauss, making this recording a significant archival contribution to his discography.
The record features organist Arthur LaMirande, a specialist in the grand Romantic organ tradition, performing works that showcase the technical demands and emotional depth inherent in Schmidt's style. Lyrichord frequently curated these releases with a scholarly focus on the instrument's capabilities, favoring clean, direct engineering that emphasized the architectural clarity of the compositions rather than the polished, commercial gloss favored by major labels at the time.
