Lore

Why it matters

MRF Records was a pioneering boutique label known for documenting rare live opera performances that were otherwise unavailable to the public. This 1970 release, MRF-7, captures a comprehensive gala program featuring an expansive cross-section of the standard operatic repertoire, making it a valuable archival artifact for listeners interested in the historical breadth of mid-20th-century vocal traditions.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1970 by MRF Records, the 'Gala Farewell' (MRF-7) serves as a significant archival artifact from the era of private-label opera recordings. During the late 1960s and 1970s, MRF Records established itself as a niche boutique label dedicated to documenting rare live performances, radio broadcasts, and historical gala concerts that major commercial labels typically ignored due to licensing complexities or limited market appeal.

The album serves as a diverse anthology featuring works from a wide-ranging roster of composers including Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner. As a compilation, it reflects the curatorial spirit of the time, capturing the ephemeral nature of grand opera galas which brought together various arias and scenes. These MRF pressings were prized by vocal enthusiasts and musicologists for preserving high-quality field recordings that provided a broader view of operatic history beyond standard studio repertoire.
