Where it came from
Released in 1970, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! captures the energy of the Rolling Stones during their landmark 1969 American tour. Recorded primarily at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the album served as a definitive document of the band's transition from their psychedelic period to the gritty, blues-infused rock sound that would define their seventies output. It was the final live release to feature guitarist Mick Taylor, whose technical proficiency significantly reshaped the band's live arrangements.
The album's iconic cover photography was captured by David Bailey, featuring Charlie Watts standing beside a donkey adorned with records and a necklace. The design concept was a tongue-in-cheek reference to a line from Bob Dylan's 'Visions of Johanna'—'Jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule'—which the band humorously literalized for the shoot. Upon its release, the record was widely praised by critics for its raw, unfiltered capture of a stadium-rock performance, effectively setting a new standard for live rock albums of the era.
