Where it came from
The Gregorian Chant Liturgy for Good Friday, released by the Musical Heritage Society in 1987, serves as an authentic document of the Chœur Grégorien de Paris's dedication to preserving medieval liturgical traditions. During the 1980s, the Musical Heritage Society played a significant role in making specialized classical and liturgical recordings accessible to American listeners through their mail-order subscription service, often licensing high-quality European performances to broaden the reach of historical religious music.
The recording captures the Chœur Grégorien de Paris under the direction of choirmaster Jacques Viret, an ensemble highly regarded for their adherence to the principles of semiology—the study of neumatic notation—which seeks to restore the rhythmic and melodic nuance of early plainsong. This specific release was intended to provide a somber, meditative experience for the Good Friday liturgy, emphasizing the austere beauty of the chant without the influence of modern musical accompaniment, a stylistic choice that reflected the period’s growing interest in early music performance practice.
