Ignacio

Ignacio was released in 1977 on the French label Egg, marking a transitional phase in the career of Evangelos Papathanassiou, better known as Vangelis. The album served as a soundtrack for the film of the same name, directed by François Reichenbach, which profiled the flamboyant Spanish painter Ignacio Carles-Tolrá. By this point in his career, Vangelis had relocated to London and was deep into his experimentation with the synthesizer-led progressive sound that would later define his iconic film scores.

The album reflects the composer's focus on atmosphere and texture, utilizing the lush, sweeping electronic landscapes that became his signature. Unlike his later blockbuster works, Ignacio maintains a more experimental, slightly more raw sonic palette typical of his mid-seventies European collaborations. While it remains a niche entry in his extensive discography, critics often point to it as a bridge between his earlier, krautrock-influenced endeavors and the polished, cinematic compositions that brought him international acclaim in the early 1980s.
