Released in 2022 by the label 180g, this compilation serves as a curated retrospective of the rich and often overlooked landscape of Japanese jazz between 1962 and 1985. The collection was compiled by Yusuke Ogawa, a renowned selector and proprietor of the Disk Union jazz store in Tokyo, whose deep expertise in the genre’s history informs the selection. It aims to showcase the unique hybridity of Japanese jazz, which evolved from post-war American influence into a distinctively atmospheric, avant-garde, and heavy sound characterized by complex arrangements and spiritual exploration.

The project was born out of a desire to catalog the output of King Records, one of Japan's most significant jazz labels during the mid-twentieth century. Ogawa’s design and selection process focused on highlighting the technical prowess of Japanese jazz masters who were experimenting with fusion, modal jazz, and traditional harmonic structures. Upon its release, the compilation was well-received by international collectors and critics alike, earning praise for its high-fidelity pressing and for providing a cohesive gateway into the vibrant, historically insular jazz scene of the Shōwa era.
