Where it came from
Released in 1986 on the independent MKW label, this recording serves as a practical demonstration of the pedagogical theories developed by German musician and educator Werner Pöhlert. The record was produced specifically to illustrate the concepts outlined in Pöhlert's 'Grundlagenharmonik,' a comprehensive harmonic system designed to simplify the understanding of jazz improvisation and composition by focusing on fundamental tonal relationships rather than traditional chord-scale theory.
The album features the Werner Pöhlert-Combo, an ensemble assembled to translate these rigorous technical theories into audible form. The design and execution were driven by Pöhlert’s desire to provide students with an empirical companion to his written treatises. While the release remains a niche academic artifact, it is respected within European jazz education circles for its methodical approach and the clarity with which it demonstrates complex harmonic structures through live performance.
