Jazzové Nebajky - The Jazz Nebyeki (Jazz Non-fables)

Jazzové Nebajky, released in 1977 on the Czechoslovak label Panton, represents a distinctive intersection of jazz and literature within the socialist-era cultural landscape. The album features the SHQ ensemble—a pioneering jazz group led by flutist and saxophonist Karel Velebný—collaborating with the actor and poet Jiří Suchý. This project was conceived as a lighthearted, improvisational take on the fable genre, utilizing the creative freedom often afforded to jazz musicians in Prague during the period to experiment with narrative storytelling and musical playfulness.

The design and artistic direction of the record reflect the idiosyncratic aesthetic of the Czech jazz scene, which often prioritized intellectual irony and surrealist influences.
