Provenance

Where it came from

Jean-Jacques Perrey et son Ondioline was released in 2017 by the Forgotten Futures label as a tribute to the pioneering French electronic musician Jean-Jacques Perrey. The collection serves as an archival compilation of rare recordings, studio sessions, and experimental works centered on the Ondioline, an early vacuum-tube electronic keyboard instrument invented by Georges Jenny in the late 1930s. Perrey, a visionary of early musique concrète and electronic synthesis, was a primary advocate for the instrument, using its unique, singing timbre to craft the whimsical, futuristic pop soundscapes that defined his mid-century career.

The compilation captures Perrey's technical mastery and his playful approach to sound design, highlighting the expressive, vibrato-rich qualities of the Ondioline. By documenting these sessions, the release provides a comprehensive look at the intersection of vintage engineering and avant-garde composition. It was received by music historians and fans of analog synthesis as a vital preservation effort, bridging the gap between Perrey's obscure 1950s and 60s experimentation and the modern resurgence of interest in early electronic instruments.
