Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1981 on A&M Records, Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive represents a deliberate pivot for the British musician, who moved away from the sharp-edged new wave sound of his previous work to explore the swing and jump blues of the 1940s. Jackson recorded the album with a group of handpicked session musicians, seeking to capture the spontaneity and high-energy performance style of artists like Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. The project was conceived as a joyful, direct tribute to a specific era of jazz rather than a reinvention of it.

The album's cover design reflects this stylistic shift, utilizing a vintage aesthetic that mirrors the musical arrangements within. Critics at the time noted the authenticity of the performances, though it served as a polarizing departure for fans who associated Jackson primarily with his punk-influenced debut. Despite the skepticism regarding such a sudden genre shift, the album has since been recognized for its technical precision and its role in demonstrating Jackson's versatility as an arranger and performer.
