Know Your V-Records Albums - Samplers Special Series - Volume 1 - Kolomaykas And Fun Songs

The Know Your V-Records Samplers Special Series was initiated by V Records, a label deeply rooted in the preservation and promotion of Eastern European and North American folk traditions, particularly those of Ukrainian heritage. Released as part of a mission to document ethnic musical identity in the mid-twentieth century, this volume specifically focuses on kolomaykas—the traditional, lively Ukrainian dance music known for its distinctive rhythmic structure and communal celebratory spirit.

The design of these albums often favored utilitarian, instructional aesthetics intended to highlight the cultural significance of the songs over commercial flair. By presenting these tracks as an educational resource, the label aimed to maintain a bridge between immigrant communities and their cultural origins, ensuring that specific dance tunes and folk songs remained accessible in the domestic record player market. The series is regarded today as a primary historical record of how regional folk music was curated and disseminated within the North American diaspora.
