Where it came from
Released by the East German state label ETERNA in 1968, this recording captures a performance held at the Händel-Haus in Halle, the birthplace of the composer Georg Friedrich Händel. The release served as part of a broader mission to preserve and promote the musical heritage of the German Democratic Republic, utilizing the authentic acoustic setting of the composer's preserved residence to provide a period-appropriate atmosphere for his chamber works.
The recording features a collaborative ensemble including soprano Adele Stolte and harpsichordist Isolde Ahlgrimm, whose work was highly regarded in mid-century Central European musicology. The production was intended to showcase high-fidelity capture of Baroque performance practices, adhering to the serious, documentation-heavy aesthetic standard for which ETERNA was known during the late 1960s.
