Where it came from
The Musical Masterpiece Society was a mail-order record club founded in the 1950s that sought to bring classical music to a wider audience through affordable, high-quality pressings. This 1963 release, catalog number M-2272, represents the mid-century effort to distribute standard repertoire to home listeners, utilizing both prominent Eastern Bloc soloists like David Oistrach and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, and established French wind ensembles.
The recording pairs Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major, K. 364, with the Sinfonia Concertante for winds, K. Anh. 9. While the latter has historically faced questions regarding its authenticity, it remains a staple of the Mozartian wind repertoire. The design of the release reflects the minimalist, functional aesthetic of the Musical Masterpiece Society, which prioritized the performance over elaborate packaging, aiming to offer the listener a curated, academic-leaning experience at a accessible price point.
