Where it came from
Released in 2012 on the independent label Airiston Punk-Levyt, this single showcases the raw, unfiltered energy of Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, a Finnish punk band composed of musicians with developmental disabilities. The group emerged from a day activity workshop in Helsinki, where they formed under the mentorship of cultural worker Pertti Kurikka. Their music is celebrated not only for its authentic adherence to the tropes of late-seventies punk rock but also for its role in challenging societal perceptions regarding disability and artistic expression.
The band's aesthetic and sound—characterized by rapid tempos, distorted guitars, and lyrics detailing the mundane struggles of daily life—served as a direct counterpoint to polished mainstream music. The track Kuus Kuppia Kahvia... Ja Yks Kokis captures this spirit, presenting a minimalist, aggressive style that prioritizes immediate emotional resonance over technical precision. Upon its release, the record was recognized for its defiant stance, ultimately helping the group gain international prominence and represent Finland in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest.
