L'Allegro Ed Il Penseroso

L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato was originally composed by George Frideric Handel in 1740, setting verses by John Milton to music to explore the contrast between mirth and melancholy. This specific release by The Record Society in 1968 represents a mid-century effort to provide high-quality, specialized recordings of Baroque repertoire to a burgeoning collector market, often focused on smaller, high-fidelity production runs for enthusiasts of early music.

The 1968 release features a distinguished ensemble directed by David Willcocks, including notable soloists such as Peter Pears and Elizabeth Harwood. The recording was designed to capture the authentic, intimate atmosphere of the Philomusica of London. At the time of its release, the recording was well-regarded for its stylistic clarity and the scholarly rigor of the performance, reflecting the era's growing interest in historically informed interpretations of Handel's secular oratorios.
