Where it came from
Released in 1975 under the Editions Studio S.M. label, this recording captures the Gregorian chant tradition preserved by the monks of Le Bec-Hellouin Abbey in Normandy, France. The abbey has long been a significant site for both religious and historical study, and this recording serves as a liturgical document intended to preserve the meditative, monophonic character of the Epiphany service as practiced within the monastic community during the mid-20th century.
The production reflects the specialized focus of Studio S.M., a label dedicated to recording sacred music and church traditions. The design of the sleeve is minimalist and respectful, prioritizing the gravity of the liturgical content over commercial aesthetic. Such recordings were primarily distributed within religious circles and among aficionados of early music, receiving modest recognition for their acoustic fidelity and the authentic preservation of the abbey's distinct choral style.
