Le Feu Follet

Le Feu Follet, released in 1980 under the Dionysos label with the catalog number DI 3004, serves as a distinct entry in the experimental and folk-influenced French music scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This record captures the idiosyncratic creative output of Régis Balmelle, a musician and composer whose work often navigated the intersection of chanson and progressive folk styles. The album was produced during a period when independent French labels were instrumental in fostering niche, avant-garde sounds that resisted the commercial homogenization of the mainstream pop industry.

The visual aesthetic of the album, characteristic of the era's independent releases, complements the atmospheric and often melancholic nature of Balmelle's compositions. While Balmelle remained a niche figure within the broader musical landscape, his work is frequently noted by collectors of French underground pressings for its conceptual cohesion and the distinctive, artisanal approach to songcraft that defined his contributions to the Dionysos roster. The reception of the record has remained largely confined to dedicated archives of progressive folk, where it is regarded as a quiet but significant artifact of its time.
