Where it came from
Released in 1979 on the Ballon Noir label, this album serves as a cornerstone of the French folk-rock revival movement led by the group Malicorne. The album is a conceptual work that explores the traditional music and folklore of the Compagnons du Devoir, a historical organization of craftsmen in France. By focusing on the figure of Adélard Rousseau, the band sought to weave together archival storytelling with their signature progressive folk arrangements, highlighting the cultural legacy of French carpentry guilds through a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation.
The album reflects Malicorne's commitment to revitalizing regional heritage during a period when the French folk scene was heavily influenced by contemporary British and American folk-rock acts. Gabriel Yacoub and Marie Sauvet were central to this artistic vision, meticulously researching archaic musical structures to ensure historical resonance while maintaining an accessible, atmospheric sound. Upon its release, it was noted for its ambitious narrative depth and remains a sought-after artifact for collectors of late 1970s European folk music who value the intersection of historical ethnographic research and avant-garde composition.
