Originally recorded in 1963, The Kingsmen's version of 'Louie Louie' became a cultural phenomenon due to its chaotic production and the unintelligible, allegedly profane vocals of lead singer Jack Ely. The song's notoriety reached such a fever pitch that it was investigated by the FBI over claims of obscenity, a controversy that inadvertently turned the track into an enduring rock and roll standard and a touchstone of the garage rock movement.
