Markus-Passion

Georg Philipp Telemann composed his Markus-Passion (St Mark Passion) in 1759, a period when he was well into his eighties and serving as the music director in Hamburg. Unlike the large-scale, dramatic works of his contemporary J.S. Bach, Telemann's passion settings are characterized by a balance of clarity, lyrical melodic grace, and a more accessible, gallant style that reflected the shifting musical tastes of the mid-18th century. It stands as a testament to his prolific nature and his ability to maintain a central role in German musical life for over half a century.

The Philips recording (835 229/30 AY) was released as part of a high-fidelity series aimed at bringing historically significant baroque repertoire to a broader post-war audience. Produced in the 1960s, this release featured a dedicated ensemble performing under the direction of Günther Arndt, who was instrumental in the mid-century revival of Telemann’s choral works.
