Messe "O Magnum Mysterium" / Motets Et Chants De La Renaissance

Released in 1960 under the RCA Victor label, this recording showcases the artistry of Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, a renowned boys' choir based at Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. The record was produced during a period when the choir was expanding its international reach, focusing on the preservation and performance of sacred Renaissance polyphony. By selecting works such as Victoria's O Magnum Mysterium and various motets, the ensemble aimed to capture the ethereal, liturgical precision that defines the early music tradition.

The album serves as a document of the choir's distinct tonal character, shaped by the pedagogical influence of Father Léandre Brault, who served as their director for many years. The production reflects the mid-century recording standards of RCA Victor, favoring a cathedral-like acoustic space to emphasize the vertical harmony and architectural phrasing of the pieces. Critically, the recording was received as a respectful and technically disciplined interpretation, helping to establish the choir's reputation in the North American classical choral canon.
