Where it came from
Released in 1974 on the Equipe label, Meu Pai Obaluaê is a significant entry in the canon of Afro-Brazilian religious music, specifically focusing on the liturgy and devotion associated with the Candomblé tradition. The record serves as a sonic document of the faith, captured during a period when the documentation and public dissemination of Afro-Brazilian spiritual practices were gaining cultural traction as a way to preserve ancestral identity.
The album features the contributions of Getulio Braga and Régis Henrique, whose arrangements were designed to honor the rhythmic complexity and sacred nature of the Orixás. By working within the technical constraints of the era, the creators aimed to produce an authentic listening experience that could function both as a liturgical tool for practitioners and as an educational resource for those seeking to understand the spiritual depth of Obaluaê, the deity of health and transformation.
