Where it came from
Released by Pathé in the mid-1950s, this shellac 78 rpm record captures Cora Vaucaire during the height of her career as a quintessential chanteuse of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés movement. As a performer, Vaucaire was celebrated for her understated, intellectual approach to the chanson tradition, often choosing material that emphasized poetic depth over theatrical spectacle. This record served as a medium for her to curate the melancholic and sophisticated atmosphere that defined the post-war French literary cabaret scene.
The tracks on this release reflect the collaboration between Vaucaire and the songwriters who helped establish her identity, such as her husband, the poet Michel Vaucaire. The design and production follow the standard industrial aesthetic of Pathé during the era, focusing on clarity of vocal reproduction to highlight the nuanced phrasing that became her trademark. While the release was produced for a mass market, it was received primarily as a sophisticated artifact of Parisian intellectual life, solidifying her reputation as 'La Dame Blanche' of the chanson.
