Where it came from
Released on the Akpolla label, the Ugo-Niyekorhion-Mwon record represents a significant artifact of mid-20th-century Nigerian highlife music. This ensemble, rooted in the cultural traditions of the Edo people, utilized their platform to preserve local folklore and linguistic nuances through dance music. The recording served as a bridge between traditional communal soundscapes and the burgeoning popular music industry in post-independence Nigeria.
The production is characteristic of the Akpolla catalog, which focused on regional highlife and traditional music styles. The design and sound reflect the intent to capture the rhythmic intensity of the Oteghe Brothers' live performances. While specific design credits are rarely archived for these niche regional pressings, the aesthetic follows the standard functionalist approach of Nigerian independent labels of the era, prioritizing the documentation of the musical output over elaborate packaging.
