Where it came from
Released in 1979 on the French independent label Atem, Pandémonium: Non, Jamais L'Espérance serves as a notable entry in the late 1970s experimental and avant-garde music scene. Jean-Baptiste Barrière, a composer and researcher with a background in musicology and philosophy, crafted this work during a period of significant exploration into the intersection of sound design and political theory, specifically engaging with the radical intellectual climate of post-May 1968 France.
The album's conceptual framework, titled 'Perspective Pour Une Politique Païenne,' reflects Barrière's interest in structured dissonance and intellectual provocation. Designed as a challenging acoustic environment, the record was received primarily within the niche European art-music community, where it was praised for its rigorous, uncompromising departure from conventional song structures. It remains a sought-after artifact of the Atem label's catalog, representative of the era's focus on avant-garde composition.
