Where it came from
This 78-rpm record was released by MGM Records in the early 1950s, a period when the studio sought to capitalize on the crossover popularity of its contract stars. Kathryn Grayson, a classically trained soprano who rose to prominence through Technicolor musicals, recorded these excerpts from Georges Bizet's Carmen to demonstrate her operatic range beyond the typical repertoire of the Hollywood musical film.
The selection highlights the transition of opera into the mid-century popular music market, utilizing the orchestral support typical of MGM’s studio arrangements. Grayson was frequently coached by established vocal teachers to ensure her interpretations met the expectations of the era’s high-fidelity recording standards, receiving positive critical attention for her technical discipline even as she continued her career as a cinematic icon.
