Where it came from
Released in 1985 on the Midas Record label, this 45 RPM single showcases the signature cumbia sound of the Cuarteto Continental, a foundational group in the tropical music scene of Peru. The track Que Me Quiten Lo Bailao represents the peak of the band's influence during a decade when Peruvian cumbia, often termed chicha, was undergoing a significant evolution by incorporating synthesizers and broader regional rhythms into traditional styles.
The production style of Midas Record during this era was focused on capturing the high-energy, danceable atmosphere of the local clubs, leading to the group's widespread popularity across Latin America. The artwork and design of these releases typically favored bold, utilitarian typography meant to stand out in the jukeboxes and radio stations that propelled these tracks to regional prominence, capturing the vibrant cultural spirit of 1980s Lima.
