Where it came from
Released in 1987 on the Celluloid label, Ragga Love by Régis Tareau emerged during a period when the French music scene was increasingly receptive to the hybridization of Caribbean rhythms and electronic production. Celluloid, a label known for bridging the gap between New York avant-garde and global underground sounds, provided a platform for artists to experiment with the early manifestations of dancehall and electronic reggae styles within a European context.
The production reflects the mid-eighties transition toward digitized instrumentation and programmed beats, aiming to capture the infectious energy of sound system culture for a wider audience. As a niche release within Tareau's discography, the record serves as a testament to the label's eclectic reach, capturing a transient moment in digital reggae where producers were synthesizing traditional island influences with the sleek, clinical production values common to the synth-pop era.
