Where it came from
Released in 1960 under the London American Recordings label, this single capitalized on the immense novelty success of David Seville and the Chipmunks. Following the 1958 breakthrough of 'The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)', the group became a holiday music phenomenon. This specific recording, catalog number HLG 9243, was produced to meet the high consumer demand for thematic Christmas music featuring the distinctive high-pitched vocal style achieved through variable-speed tape manipulation.
The design of this release reflects the era's mid-century marketing approach to children's novelty records. Ross Bagdasarian Sr., who created the Chipmunks and provided all the voices, aimed to blend traditional holiday cheer with the contemporary studio experimentation that defined his work. The record was met with significant commercial enthusiasm, contributing to the enduring association between the Chipmunks and the seasonal music charts that continues to this day.
